Our trip will begin with a swift drive across the plains states to
Denver. After overnights in Kansas City and Denver, we’ll head through
the Rockies en route to Moab Utah. Coming
out of The Rockies, we will receive a sampling of rugged desert scenery with a
visit to Colorado National Monument. At the edge of the Colorado Plateau,
the monument encompasses majestic golden canyons and towering sandstone
formations. Along the 22 mile rim drive, we will stop at several
overlooks to marvel at its sheer walls and reaching spires.
Departing Colorado National Monument, a gorgeous drive along the
Colorado River will bring us to Moab, Utah. Though the small town sits at
the base of beautiful red cliffs of the La Salle Mountains, making it a jewel
in the desert, Moab is most noted for being
the gateway to Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, and Dead Horse Point SP .
During our 5-night stay in Moab, we will engage in several exciting
activities. The following morning, we will be joined by a local guide for a
tour of Arches NP. The park has the greatest density of natural arches in
the world. In addition to arches, curious red and orange sandstone
formations such as pinnacles and balanced rocks dot the park, making Arches
National Park a fascinating place to visit.
Later, we will have a cowboy style
Dutch Oven Dinner and then board a sightseeing boat on the Colorado
River for a Canyonlands by Night Cruise. When the sun falls and the stars
begin to shine brilliantly in the desert sky, the boat turns around and begins
to float downstream. As vehicles along the river light up the canyon
walls, inspirational music fills the air. This unbelievable evening on
the Colorado River is one of the most unusual sightseeing attractions in our
One of our days in Moab will find us boarding 4-wheel drive
vehicles for an incredible journey into Canyonlands NP. A guided off-road
tour will carry us from the rim of an awe-inspiring canyon to the Colorado
River below. The jeep trail's winding track along the canyon give us dramatic red rock views most Moab
visitors never see. After lunch
along the River, our adventure will continue as we board a jetboat for a
exciting ride on the river.
On our last day in Moab, we head to Monument Valley Navaho Park,
where giant, reddish buttes jut up from the desert floor, creating one of
America's most recognized landscapes.
Here, we will join a special off-road vehicle tour, hosted by members of
the Navajo Nation. This tour will
take us into parts of Monument Valley closed to private vehicles. We will
learn why this area is sacred to their tribe, hear legends and myths, and learn
of the hardships of those who had lived in the valley. During our tour,
we'll have a private cookout in Monument Valley.
We will be overnighting in
Denver and Kansas City again as we head for home with plenty of wonderful
memories and of photos of our Moab adventure!
