HISTORIC CHARLESTON
April 9 - 13, 2012
We’ve reworked our Charleston trip to focus on the scrumptious cuisine of the Coastal Low Country.
With a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War, houses and buildings showcasing stunning historic architecture unparalleled anywhere in America, an alluring waterfront, and a bustling shopping district, Charleston is a fantastic place to vacation.  Especially in the late spring!
Our five-day trip to The Palmetto City consists of two direct drives--one full day to get to Charleston and one full day travelling home.  We'll spend one day visiting Savannah and two full days discovering  why Charleston is  considered  a world-class travel destination, with each day focusing upon a different aspect of  the city!
Our first day will take us to Savannah for a trolley tour of the city before enjoying a must-do event when visiting the Low Country, dining at Paula Dean’s Lady and Sons Restaurant.  Before leaving town, we’ll stop by River Street for some shifty shopping.
After arriving back in Charleston and freshening up a bit at the hotel, we’re going to enjoy a three-hour, four-course dinner cruise around Charleston’s harbor.
On our first full day, we’ll introduce ourselves to this charming Southern City and its history during two narrated tours.  Our first tour will find us boarding vans that will whisk us throughout Charleston, pointing out highlights of the town like Citadel Military College, The Battery, Rainbow Row, Old Slave Market, and Catfish Row.  Our second tour will have us boarding horse-drawn carriages that will trod along the streets of the historic district where antebellum mansions (most over 200 years old) proudly stand as testament to Charleston's distinctive past.
We'll spend some time shopping and dining around Old City Market.  The historic sheds of the market span several blocks and beckon visitors to come haggle with arts and crafts vendors who have set up stalls.  To top off the day, we have arranged for a special culinary treat for our group - a Low Country cooking demonstration where you sit back and enjoy watching talented instructors prepare the meal.  Three items will be prepared and enjoyed by one and all.
Visiting the grounds of the historic plantations that lie just outside Charleston’s boundaries is considered a must-do activity for tourists, and  we'll be setting aside one day to visit two of  the area’s most famous plantations.
At Middleton Place we'll discover the huge formal gardens considered by many to be the most lovely of the region.   We'll enjoy lunch in the Middleton Place Restaurant, where guests savor Low Country fare while overlooking the rice mill pond and azalea hillside.
Then, we'll head for Magnolia Plantation to explore its grounds and stroll along the boardwalks of its swamp garden.  A narrated nature boat will glide us through Magnolia's old flooded rice field where we might spot an alligator or two!  We’ll finish with a tram tour of the plantation’s grounds.
Dinner for this evening will be back in the City Market at one of Charleston’s favorite haunts, Hyman’s Seafood.
Don't miss out on this unique experience!  This well-rounded trip to Charleston with a side excursion to Savannah is going to be very interesting and a whole lot of fun, too!
