Join Travel Crazy as we journey to Washington DC, a destination that encouarges curious visitors to ponder the history of our nation, celebrate our national heroes, and marvel at our intricate form of government.
Our 5-day trip will consist of two direct drives--one to get to the DC area, one to get home, and three full days of sightseeing. During our trip, we will be utilizing hotel suite accommodations located in one of Washington's suburbs--a very comfortable place to relax after a full day of activity.
We will be dedicating one of our days to visiting monuments and memorials of DC. Joined by a local guide, we'll meander throughout our capital city while receiving informative narration about the various national landmarks we're seeing. Stops during our monument tour should include Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial and Korean War Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial.
We'll also pay our respects to those who have fallen while defending our country's freedom at Arlington National Cemetery. A humbling cemetery tour aboard the Tourmobile (with stops at the Kennedy Gravesite and the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier), will transport us through the serene rolling hills of Arlington.
During a second day, we'll go to the US Capital Visitors Center where we'll join a guided tour of the US Capital. Then, we'll visit one of the most overlooked of DC attractions--the Library of Congress. Not only is the interior of the building absolutely spectacular, but the guided tour is very intriguing. We'll finish up this day with a visit to the National Archives, which carries the responsibility of protecting our country's most priceless documents such as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the National Constitution.
Our third day of sightseeing will consist of a pleasant side trip to Baltimore--a mere hour away from Washington. Here, we'll call upon Fort McHenry which successfully defended the city from British Invasion during the War of 1812. The flag at this star-shaped fort was the inspiration of Francis Scott Key's Star Spangled Banner--our National Anthem.
Then, we'll visit a very unique Baltimore attraction. At the American Visionary Art Museum, a fascinating guided tour will cast light upon the rather odd pieces it houses. The displayed artwork has been created by artists lacking formal training, many of them with troubled minds. It's an astonishing museum--memorable and entertaining, even for those who aren't bigtime art fans!
Bringing to a close our side-trip to Baltimore will be a few hours of free time at the city's attractive Inner Harbor. Boasting an assortment of waterfront eateries, gift shops, boat rides and tourist attractions, the Inner Harbor is a great place to leisurely unwind after days of heavy sightseeing.
